Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, and this has made me reflect on the role of loneliness in those who have mental health problems and suicidal thoughts. I include myself in this, as it is something I face from time to time, and even currently.
People are often surprised when I reveal how I feel, particularly as I am seen as an outgoing, bubbly, and successful person. In fact I have recently received a Rose of Northamptonshire award, and performed in the show Send me the Pillow celebrated 75th anniversary of Windrush, and at an Age of Love Café talking about loneliness.
I performed a monologue from the play ‘Notes on a Scandal’, which describes exactly what it is like to be totally and utterly Alone. I know this first hand and have had complete weekends and bank holidays where I have not even used my voice; I have gone about my day in complete and utter silence, as well as in solitude.

I think there is a distinct link between this type of loneliness and susceptibility to having suicidal thoughts and mental health problems. Also many people who live with mental health conditions experience crippling loneliness. I am fortunate, as I have learned to recognise when I get these dark thoughts about wanting to end my life, and I have learned what I can do about it. I recognise that for me a thought is different from an action, and that I can reach out BEFORE acting on my thoughts.
However for many people suicidal thoughts can lead to action, that is why it is important to ask direct open questions if you are worried about someone you love. Don't leave them alone, and support them to seek medical attention. By doing so you could save a life.
